This year, to mark the anniversary of the 1916 Rising, the students and staff of Raheen N.S. held a short commemoration and flag raising ceremony at the school on Thursday 16th of March.
It was a cold, but dry morning as the school came together, singing favourite songs such as Irish Soldier Laddie and Ireland’s call. Students from 1st to 6th class read prayers of the faithful. We reacquainted ourselves with our own proclamation, composed last year by 5th and 6th class. Tomás, Jake, David and Mark read the proclamation to the rest of the school, reminding us of what we aim to achieve in Ireland’s future. Following this, Caoimhe, the school’s eldest student, and Xavier, the school’s youngest student, then raised the Irish tricolour. The students sang Amhráin na bhFiann, and Aishling recited ‘Soliloquy’ by Francis Ledwidge, before the ceremony concluded with a boistorous and rousing version of the Haka as Gaeilge. It was a wonderful morning, with all the school sporting green for St. Patrick’s Day.

Congratulations to all the boys and girls from Raheen that passed their Deep End test in the Apex leisure centre in New Ross this week! All the boys and girls who attend the lessons have worked very hard over the past two months to improve their swimming skills and the Deep End group were delighted to come away with their certificates this week!
For the last few weeks 3rd and 4th class have been exploring space, learning all they could about the other planets, the moon, the sun and some of the greatest astronauts like Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. As part of their work they completed their first projects of the year and their work was outstanding!
Take a look at some of the projects below!

Third and fourth class have been very busy lately learning all about beat and rhythm in school with Miss Byrne. She has been working with the class over the last month and this is just a taste of the great work they explored during that time.
Beat and rhythm in music and body percussion through a German folk dance in PE allowed the class to explore music making with their bodies. They had great fun as you can see from some of the videos below!
Thanks again to Miss Byrne for the wonderful work she did with us while teaching in Raheen N.S.
Last year third and fourth completed a project to plant and grow their own sunflowers.
It was hard work, planting and looking after their plants everyday, watching them growing taller and taller. After a few months of nurturing in school, the class brought their plants home in order to plant them in their gardens and hope they grew even taller.
This August two of our current fourth class took pictures beside their sunflowers and were kind enough to bring in the photos to share with us. Both Aishling and Jodi did a great job with their flowers, helping them to grow to massive heights.
Aishling’s wonderful sunflower took pride or place in her garden, stretching taller than Aishling herself!!
While Jodi’s sunflower reached unbelievable heights, stretching higher than a one-storey building, with a beautiful bloom and great wide leaves!
Both girls did such excellent work and were so kind to remember to take photos of the finished project over the summer! We hope the other boys and girls managed to get such wonderful end projects as well! Well done!
